Well on my way to work today I was quite convincingly out dragged by a Golf GTI.

I would expect it from a Golf R32, or VR6 and the like, but not a regular GTI. There's a nice long double slip road leading on to the motorway which I like to get in the second lane and nail it past the other cars (why does no one use both lanes on slip roads?). Anyway my overtake of the GTI was short lived as he wasn't having any of it and sailed past.

OK I feel better now, just did a quick search and it seems even a regular GTI these days is capable of 0-60: 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed: 146mph. I thought they were just 'warm' hatches, but that's pretty quick. Fair play to him.

Have had a couple of encounters with GTI's. First was late at night in Nottingham (missus was in the car). Almost had him but there were some parked cars in his lane. Rather than crash my roadie I backed off and let him in (how nice of me heh?).

The other encounter was a couple of weeks back going on the A54 Buxton road. Stupid GTI came flying up behind me. Couldn't overtake because of cars coming the opposite way.

That was on the straight stuff. Soon as we hit the curves he was toast. My little roadie hugged the bends like **** on a blanket. The GTI was nowhere to be seen. Later on I got stuck behind an artic doing about 30mph.

Had followed him for almost a mile when I noticed Mr GTI had finally caught me up.

Don't worry you didn't beat him in the drag (unless of course you were dressed like Priscilla Queen of the Desert in which case you did beat him in drag).

If there was twisty stuff it would have been all over.

a golf GTI mkIV would have been an easier race... it's like they put a GTi badge on the car without doing anything to it...

but I think the main point is... it may have blown past you, but more people were looking at you car

It was one of the new style designs. But It was very boring to look at. Apart from the GTI badge and the twin pipe exhausts it looked just like a plain Golf. It didn't even make much noise on acceleration, not like say an R32.
