Water Leak Pt 2 "Wet Wet Wet From the Speakers"
Posted on Thu 01 Nov 2007 by Remix80 (2806 reads)
When i bought my roadster 2 months ago both mirrors leaked overs the speakers etc ,they dont now at all ! here is a short easy guide to how i cured them
Hope this helps someone

1st make sure the mirror triangles are trapping themselves neatly under the door seal ,mine were not and all that was needed was a little gentle bend of the mirror mounting frame to make them line up level at the top with the seal (see pic, top line)

2nd clean all the areas i have marked with yellow maker on the following pics with a good rubber and vinyl dressing (including the bits you can not see, all the door rubber and mating surface round the door )

since this treatment which i would recommend about once a month i have not had one drip ,

I may be just lucky but from wet speakers to dry ones it worked for me, the surface cleaning and treatment is vital to keep the rubber supple and flexible.

ps it dont look like mustard when its done, that was added to show where to apply

Update to this fix "not one drip since ,even after 4 hours of wind and rain in one day"

Still not a drop 19th November

Just a note, Lower the window if a little pressure is needed to align the mirror triangle ,and dont pull too hard, you may only need 2mm or so ,gentle then measure and so on

Did you bend the mirror triangle with all the plastic trim in place or did you remove it first? Water ingress at my mirrors is terrible at the moment. It even gets in when I carefully wash my car.....Knightmare!

Yes .plastic in place just measured it then applied a little pressure against it ,and it moved about 2mm .it was done at the same time as the rubber and door frame treatment so its hard to know which had the most effect .but since this article I have never seen one drop to this day .

Hello. Thank You for the guide.

But I do not understand how You moved/bend the mirror wing.

I tried to move/bend the external part of mirror by hand, but it returned to the same position (the internal metal part can be bent but it bends back when aligned to the external plastic part)

In my case, the upper part of that triangle is around 5 mm far from the glass - the glass is bend, but the external triangle is not ( straight shape).

So I can't really figure out, how the alignment can be achieved.

Yeah, I'm not too sure how the bending works. It all seems pretty solid therefore not moving very much.

Will defo be trying the Rubber care though as work at a garage and we have some of that!

Yea, I am so suffering from wing mirror leaking. I am using a rain cap all the time (no, not when driving!!!), but it's quite a pain to have to do this. I tried to coax the black plastic mounting pieces to better fit the rubber seal, but no joy.

Im just wondering. Is there anyway a sealant would fix this? for instance putting silicone sealant between the crack where te two parts of the mirror meets? i cant seem to fix this leak and dont want to seal the entire car with glue. So just wondering, is it in this crack the water comes trough or is it from the window and down?
